Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a deep commitment to students, continuous learning, and strong relationships. Over my 24 years in the Lansing School District, I have remained focused on doing what is best for students while leading with integrity, purpose, and equity at the forefront of every decision.

My success is also rooted in my willingness to grow—learning from mentors, engaging in ongoing leadership and policy development, and applying data-informed practices to improve outcomes for all students. Building trusting relationships with families, staff, and community partners has been essential, as meaningful collaboration strengthens schools and creates lasting impact.

Finally, I attribute my success to resilience and service. From early childhood through high school leadership, I have embraced every role as an opportunity to mentor, advocate, and lead with compassion, ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality, inclusive learning environment where they can thrive.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to always keep students at the center of every decision and lead with integrity, even when it’s difficult. I was taught that titles may change, but your impact is measured by how you serve others, build trust, and stay grounded in your values. When you focus on doing what’s right for students and support the people around you, growth and opportunities naturally follow.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women to believe in their voice and never underestimate the power of their presence. Lead with confidence, preparation, and purpose, even when you are the only one in the room. Seek out mentors, continue learning, and don’t be afraid to take up space or advocate for yourself and others. Most importantly, stay true to your values—when you lead with authenticity and a commitment to serving students and community, your impact will speak for itself.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in education today include meeting the diverse academic and social-emotional needs of students amidst ongoing changes in funding, accountability expectations, and community pressures. Ensuring equity—so every student has access to high-quality instruction, support services, and opportunities—remains both a persistent challenge and a central responsibility. Staffing shortages, evolving instructional models, and the need for meaningful family and community partnerships also require intentional leadership and collaboration.

At the same time, there are tremendous opportunities. We have access to powerful data and technology to personalize learning, stronger research on effective practices, and a growing focus on culturally responsive and inclusive education. The emphasis on social-emotional learning and whole-child development allows schools to better support students’ well-being. Finally, there is an opportunity to elevate the profession by mentoring future leaders, advocating for thoughtful policy, and building systems that empower educators and students to thrive.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are integrity, equity, service, and relationships. In my work, I lead with integrity by making decisions that are honest, ethical, and always centered on what is best for students. Equity guides my commitment to ensuring every student has access to high-quality learning opportunities and the support they need to succeed.

In both my professional and personal life, I value service and relationships. I believe meaningful change happens through strong relationships built on trust, respect, and collaboration. These values keep me grounded, purpose-driven, and focused on making a positive impact in the lives of others every day.
