About Janel

Janel Alford serves as an administrative assistant in employment and litigation within the legal department at Capital One. In this role, which she began in May, she manages the calendars of four executives, ensures they have necessary materials for meetings, handles scheduling, de-conflicts appointments, and supports team-building events. She has been in the HR field since 2021 when she obtained her first official HR title. Alford earned her associate's degree in October of last year and her bachelor's degree from Liberty University last Friday, having graduated high school in 2012. She is a member of the APN network, Capital One's administrative professionals group, and values hard work, a strong work ethic, being detail-oriented and organized, fostering an open family-like culture, and acting in legal, moral, and ethical ways. Outside her role, she volunteers with the Richmond Volleyball Club to provide activities for students who may not afford school programs.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Not giving up and being resilient. Every no doesn't mean it's a no for good, it just could mean not right now. It's all about timing.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get to know your leader to build connections both professionally and personally, which helps anticipate their needs and manage calendars better.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Standing out as an administrative assistant since everybody does the same thing; finding ways to build your own traditions and become memorable on the team beyond work.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Hard work, good work ethic, being detail-oriented and organized, fostering an open family-like culture, and doing things the legal, moral, and ethical way.
