Her Story

About Janelle

I've been in my position at Oakland Unified for almost 4 years now, doing writing and communications work. I got my degree at SF State starting with creative writing and moving into playwriting. After graduating I worked as a copywriter for Callisto doing back cover copy and website copy. During COVID I pivoted by moving to Seattle with my husband to take a communications manager position which was less competitive, then moved back and continued advancing. I'm proud of growing our social media by 600% and bringing in thousands of new followers with a younger lens as a parent myself.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice is to always keep intention and impact top of mind. I think about my intention and impact in everything I do, whether writing or moving through the world, to make the best impact I can and create positive ripple effects.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Always be able to pivot and look where the market is going. Know where technology is heading, take risks, work hard, prove yourself, and make yourself invaluable. Network and stay communicative to know the trends.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My family is the number one value. Family and culture are huge for me. I base everything off of being surrounded by my village of family. I also value living intentionally with compassion, kindness, and making positive impacts without regret.
