Prior to joining WGU, Janessa served as Assistant Principal at James Irwin Charter Schools for over six years. In this leadership role, she focused on fostering academic excellence, supporting teacher development, and creating a student-centered school culture rooted in high expectations and continuous improvement. Her experience in both administrative and instructional settings gives her a unique perspective on how to inspire growth at all levels of education.
Janessa holds a Master of Education in Instructional Design from Western Governors University and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Pre-Law concentration from Colorado State University Pueblo, where she graduated summa cum laude. The best career advice I’ve ever received is: Never assume anything. It’s a simple reminder that clear communication, asking questions, and seeking understanding are essential—whether you're leading a team, working with students, or navigating professional growth. It’s taught me to stay curious, clarify expectations, and always approach situations with an open mind.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, faith, and service are the values that guide both my work and personal life. I believe in showing up with authenticity, supporting others with compassion, and leading by example—whether I'm mentoring students, serving at Zeal Church in Colorado Springs, or coaching my daughter’s softball team. These values keep me grounded and aligned with my purpose every day.
