Her Interview

Ten minutes with Janet

01What do you attribute your success to?

My parents taught me not to quit something I started just because I don't like it. They emphasized completing what you sign up for, which has shaped my approach to work and life. I have passed this on to my daughters, teaching them to be independent and successful women.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

A mentor doctor told me during photography sessions: 'tell me the diagnosis, tell me the treatment that you're gonna use' and when I said I had no idea, he said 'you have the knowledge, we've taught you' and not to be afraid to express what I know.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be an independent person. Your opinion matters and don't be afraid to express it. Don't stop in the middle of something. Realize you know what you're speaking about. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't know the answer - it's better to say you'll find it out.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Private equity taking over smaller companies and private businesses is the biggest challenge, as they may not follow through on community needs started by private practices. However, it also presents opportunities with more capital to expand, such as building a beautiful dry eye spa space.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Expect people to reach further goals than they set for themselves. As general manager, be part of the team not just the leader, which builds respect. Not being afraid to be part of the team.
