Her Story

About Janet

I've had my entrepreneurial brand, Informative Artistry, for 10 years. I went to school for public relations and applied marketing, so I do a lot of celebrity, lifestyle, and nonprofit events. Currently, I'm representing different brands like FIFA, Prada, NBA, and more. I'm currently working the World Cup right now and working for different other brands like Lavazza, doing product launches and product marketing for them. I've worked with celebrities like Carmelo Anthony at NBA All-Star Weekend, Jamie Foxx, and recently ran into Jimmy Kimmel at the World Cup. I've always liked working with celebrities and being in the event space. I love putting events together and watching them come to life. Even though it's kind of stressful putting the events together, seeing the final product come together the day of the event is the fun thing for me. I love creating fun experiences for people, whether it's giving free swag away, limited edition products, or having meet and greets with celebrities and fan experiences with them. I always wanted to work in the entertainment industry because I'm very personable and charming. I love connecting with people, connecting others with people, networking, meeting new people, and traveling. I've been in the industry for over 10 years. Originally I'm from DC, and then I moved to LA. My typical day lately involves 12-hour shifts working commercial activations like for Team USA. I usually get Starbucks and breakfast, then go to the activation. I like to get there early, so I'm usually the first one in the room and more than likely the last one out.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I've been doing a lot of this solo and have been my own mentor in a sense. The last thing I could probably think of is when I was working more in the social media space and trying to figure out what is the best way to build a brand or audience. Someone told me that consistency is key, being consistent with your content and the message that you put out.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Discernment is key. Not everybody that you work with is your friend. Obviously, it's important to network and make the connections, but have discernment and have boundaries when you're working with people. Don't over-give too much. Know your limits. Just kind of understand the game, but don't let the game consume you.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I wouldn't say there's necessarily challenges, because I've been in the industry for over 10 years. I'll probably say the challenge that I experienced was moving, because originally I'm from DC and then I live in LA. So the challenge I experienced with breaking into the industry here compared to the East Coast is the bureaucratic process of networking in a different way, where you kind of have to work through the politics of dealing with different gatekeepers that prevent certain opportunities from manifesting because they're used to working with a certain group of people that's their go-to. So I kind of had to really show that I can do the work, even though I already have a master's degree and I've already worked with celebrities when I moved here. So I'd probably say that was a challenge, but an opportunity for me to understand the event, brand ambassador, brand management, experiential marketing, and targeting space in Los Angeles.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Communication is very important to me. I'm very big on that, so I'll probably say healthy and consistent communication. Loyalty is something that's very important to me. I'm a very loyal person. And resilience. I've lived a very interesting life. Life has definitely had its experiences for me. I feel like I've had the opportunity of dealing with a lot of interesting experiences, so I think resilience is a big thing for me.
