Her Story
About Janet
I started in senior care by accident while working as a caregiver to pay for college, intending to go to med school. After graduating with a bachelor's in psychology in 2012, I became a social services director and fell in love with the field. I then helped grow Sunlight Senior Care from one client to three locations plus a home health division. I value building relationships with staff, families, and residents, and recently moved to Texas to be closer to family where I am now an executive director.

Ten minutes with Janet
01What do you attribute your success to?
Resilience and compassion. When I work with caregivers, families, or residents, they can see that I care and am not just there for a paycheck. I get the job done while being compassionate.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be resilient. It's a tough business with low days when revenue is down or clients and staff are unhappy, but you have to push forward, remember the great achievements, and celebrate those successes to get through the down times.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Finding reliable care staff has been a struggle since COVID, though it is improving. Retention and training new staff is key.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, transparency, empathy, and compassion. I bring resilience and compassion from my mom, who is originally from Kenya, lived in Belgium, and struggled to put me through boarding school so I could come to the United States.
