Her Story
About Janette
Janette Walker brings more than five decades of experience in customer service and administrative support. Her career began with clerical work in a Navy office during summer programs, followed by a role in the typing pool at General Dynamics Electric Boat where submarines were built. She later served as an international customer service representative in the ball bearing industry, managing accounts with subsidiaries across Asia including China and Japan, as well as Europe. This path led her to city government and the chamber of commerce, where she discovered her passion for community work. In education, she spent the past three years conducting GED assessments and mentoring young single moms, drawing from her own experiences as a single mother. She earned an AS in business administration as a non-traditional student and maintains her role as a notary. Now in her second retirement, she attributes her success to consistent hard work and strong ethics, and she plans to return to the local Board of Education on an as-needed basis while focusing on inspiring the next generation, especially single moms, to become self-sufficient through education and perseverance.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Janette
01What do you attribute your success to?
Gettin' up and going to work every day. My life was simple. I had good work, I did good work. I was fortunate enough to have good employment. But my success was just getting up, going to work every day. I did partake in different programs to grow and learn in my development. We met, and we've experienced, I've worked with the community, and just got different experiences through my job.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do a good job. Just do good work. I have strong work ethics. We'd come to work every day, and we do a good job. If that's it, it's that simple.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to become self-sufficient. Don't depend on others to live your life. You have to do you to live your life, and get the education, and get the experience, so you can have a better life. You don't give up. You just keep moving along. Especially for single moms who have gotten lost along the way and need some direction.
