Her Story

About Janice

My life experiences and what I've been through in my life led me to my current role. My book 'Afraid to Love Again' tells my story - I had a horrific background from a young age all the way up until my 40s or 50s. Going through all those horrific things allowed me to become a shero, which is someone who wants to be someone else's hero. I went through the pain, I went through the process, and now I am walking into my purpose, where I give back to the community and to young ladies who are in shelters or going through difficult things. Some of the women I mentor, I've never even met in person. On any given day, I can get 10 to 15 calls where I literally have to mentor young ladies. I give them goals and steps to build up their confidence so they can go through the pressure and walk into their purpose one day. I'm a motivational speaker who extends people to where they need to be. I treat people like I would want to be treated, because you never know when it's your turn. I'm also a caregiver, and I absolutely love my job - I incorporate my calling into everything I do. I don't get overwhelmed because I know how to compartmentalize things and put them in their proper place.

Ten minutes with Janice

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never letting go of the energy inside me that told me I was better than what I was experiencing. Even going through the shelters and all the horrific things in my life, there was always this energy inside that I was better than what I was doing. I knew I was better than what I was experiencing, so I never let go of that energy. That's really how I am able to stand where I am today and to help other people - because when God did it for me, I did not allow the outside noise to affect the real me on the inside. I live from the inside out, not the outside in. I don't allow life circumstances or things on the outside to affect what I think about myself or how I should move about. God has given everyone strong willpower and shown us our destiny, but so many times we allow life circumstances to affect us. I held onto that inner strength, and that's what carried me through.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women is that no matter how hard life is or wherever you are in life, you are always better than what it looks like. It's not what happened back then, it's what's happening now. You can change it - a lot of things in the past you cannot change, it's gone, that page has turned. But you can always prepare for the future and change things so your future can look brighter. I like to use myself as an example of where I've been, because I think a lot of times if people don't feel that you've been there, then sometimes advice goes right across their head. So I share my experience to show them that no matter what they're going through, they can overcome it just like I did.
