Her Story

About Janie

Janie Santos serves as a Police Sergeant in law enforcement in Lockhart. She finds her work both challenging and rewarding, noting that every day brings something different as she helps people and communicates community needs, including mental health resources and support for children. Santos takes on a leadership role with her team while also participating in the Lockhart Police association, which advocates for raises and organizes community events such as ice cream for cops, coffee with officers, muffins for moms, trunk or treat, and Kid Fish. Her path into the profession began after her older brother was killed in 1986, possibly by a drunk driver, an event that highlighted the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and first responders. She started in a jail position before attending the police academy. Santos advises those entering the field, particularly young women, to prepare for seeing difficult situations and missing family events like birthdays and holidays, while recognizing the strength required and the supportive colleagues who help navigate the predominantly male environment. She encourages pursuing a career one loves and staying committed to it.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think that you need to go into it knowing you're gonna see things that you never saw. You're gonna see the worst in people, in the situations that they're in, in almost the hardest times of their lives. And you mean, you know, we're not counselors, we're not medical professionals, but that's what the roles we have to take at the time. As most women come in, you know, are just starting out young and things like that, and building their families. Which, they just gotta understand, they're gonna miss out on some things, as far as you're gonna miss some things, and, you know, birthdays, Christmases, and holidays, and things like that. You'll adjust. So you just gotta be prepared, and it takes very strong women to do it. You're gonna be surrounded by, you know, tons of men, you know? But the thing is, is that the guys that I work with are amazing. And I believe that that's what helps me, so and in times when I'm struggling, they're there.
