Her Story
About jannette
I've spent 37 years in property management, working my way through every aspect of the apartment industry. I started my career managing a 68-unit condo that was a full rehab, with the guidance of my mentor Aunt Brenda, who got me that first property manager position and held my hand through it. After doing everything I thought I could do in the apartment industry, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try something different. I took on a District Manager role 13 months ago, which is basically the same as a regional position in the apartment industry. In that role, I oversaw 15 stores and 2 RV parks, traveling 35% of the time to different states including Colorado, which I loved because I enjoy seeing new places. Recently, my properties were sold, and I'm now working to get back into apartment management, though I'm finding that AI is creating challenges in the job search process as I believe good candidates are being overlooked.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Believe in yourself. That's the best career advice I've ever received, and it's something that has guided me throughout my 37 years in property management.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't get caught up in all of the drama and gossip, the he-said-she-said stuff. Just believe in yourself, stay to yourself, and learn what you can learn. Always call me when you need me. But really, just don't get involved with all of that. That's the one thing in my industry I don't like - everybody does it, and it's just not productive. As a leader, I don't allow it, so I just see a lot of young women coming in, or men, and they kind of get caught up in something, and they shouldn't have.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
My biggest challenge right now is trying to get in somewhere and get myself in the door. AI is one of the biggest challenges, because companies are using AI to do their research and screening, and I think they're overlooking good candidates. AI is doing everything now, and I believe it's causing them to miss quality people who would be great fits for the roles.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty and transparency are most important to me in both work and personal life. I also believe strongly in just doing the right thing - that's a core value that guides everything I do.
