Her Story
About January
I got into the finance industry because I had made a lot of financial mistakes myself. Just like somebody who wants to lose weight researches and tries all sorts of different things, for me it was about finding the best way to keep myself accountable and keep my finances in check, and that meant actually being in the finance industry. We're all eventually going to retire, and if I can retire at an earlier age, I would much rather do that. In order for me to do that, I had to learn myself what are the proper ways to be able to retire earlier rather than later. Now I focus solely on retirement, talking about 401Ks, IRAs, Roths, 403Bs, 457s, TSPs, anything that's either tax-deferred, and we talk about retirement and taxes during retirement and how to minimize those taxes. I've been with Extreme One Financial and One Oak Financial, which is my current company. Through both of those companies, I've learned so much about the industry and just about people in general, and how people save and how they invest. I learn the most through people's stories, and our CEO at One Oak, Mike Milligan, is just a walking encyclopedia, and so he's my mentor and I gather a lot of my information through him.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to read. Read a lot. Read articles, read books, read online news sources. I'm a part of the finance portion in the news app for Apple, and just, I love it. I always get notifications about it, and just constantly reading is vital in this industry, because the finance industry is always evolving. It's important to stay up to date, so reading is pertinent in this industry.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The challenges are that people may not be ready for what you have to say at this very moment. But that doesn't necessarily mean a no, it just means they're not ready, and so I think being patient and persistent is vital, too. Because we just never know when that prospect may be ready to say yes to your offer. So that's the challenge. The challenge is that you really do have to stay persistent and patient.
