Her Story
About Jasmine
Jasmine Ballard is a human-centered strategist, storyteller, and entrepreneur dedicated to preserving cultural memory, family history, and intergenerational legacy. As the founder of Melanotion and the creator of Cultural Home, she develops innovative platforms and community-centered programs that empower families—particularly Black and Brown families—to document their stories, preserve their heritage, and safeguard the wisdom of older generations. Her mission was born from a deeply personal experience of recording her grandfather's life story just days before his passing, reinforcing her belief that family narratives are invaluable assets that should be intentionally preserved for future generations.
Before launching her ventures, Ballard built a multidisciplinary career spanning beauty, user experience, design strategy, and innovation. She began in the beauty industry with Sephora and Bobbi Brown before transitioning into design thinking and human-centered strategy, leading initiatives for organizations including Ally Financial, Bayer Crop Science, Duke Energy, and Texas Children's Hospital. Throughout her corporate career, she specialized in experience strategy, conversational AI, design thinking facilitation, and cross-functional collaboration, helping organizations create products, services, and experiences centered on human needs. Her unique blend of storytelling, technology, and strategic design has positioned her as a respected voice in innovation and cultural preservation.
Today, Ballard combines entrepreneurship, public speaking, and community leadership to advance conversations around identity, belonging, and legacy. Through Melanotion, she facilitates storytelling workshops, cultural gatherings, and educational programs that encourage families to preserve their histories before they are lost. Her TEDx talk, Beyond the Checkbox: The Power of Cultural Confidence, along with appearances on public media and collaborations with educational and nonprofit organizations, reflects her commitment to reshaping how communities understand and preserve their collective narratives. By bridging technology with oral history and cultural storytelling, Ballard continues to build systems that help people protect their memories, strengthen family connections, and pass meaningful legacies from one generation to the next.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jasmine
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a pivotal moment in my life. Losing my corporate job in October 2023 led me to discover my true purpose and inspired me to pursue a path aligned with my values. Guided by the wisdom and encouragement of my grandparents, my spiritual mentors, I embraced entrepreneurship and meaningful work. Today, I also find fulfillment in mentoring students through Melanotion's internship program with North Carolina A&T University's Journalism Department, helping them develop archival research skills, preserve family histories, and discover the power of their own stories.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is to believe in your vision and have the courage to pursue it. Focus on your own goals rather than comparing your journey to others, and let their achievements inspire you instead of discourage you. Embrace collaboration over competition, seek out mentors who can guide and challenge you, and remember that every meaningful idea starts with taking the first step.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are legacy, purpose, and service. I believe in preserving the stories, wisdom, and experiences that shape who we are, because they strengthen our sense of identity and connection across generations. My work is driven by the belief that honoring our elders and documenting their stories ensures their knowledge and heritage are never lost, leaving a lasting impact for future generations.
