Ten minutes with Jasmine
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to how I treat my patients. My patients feel like they can come to me and talk to me one-on-one. We build a rapport, and I have a lot of dedicated patients because I listen to their complaints and build trust with them.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to do it while I was young, because it doesn't come as easy when you get older. Now that I'm older it doesn't come as easy, and it wasn't as easy as when I started in my 20s.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to really have a passion for nursing and for people. A lot of young people don't stay in it very long because of how stressful it is. If you have a passion, you'll stick with it. You can't do it for the money or job stability, you have to have a passion for helping people.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Work-life balance is a big challenge, not taking work home. Insurance and healthcare hurdles can push back a lot of things for us and the patients. My last job had me charting 40 to 80 hours a week at home, which wasn't worth it even with higher pay.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being an individual and treating individuals as individuals is most important, especially in healthcare. It's not a one-size-fits-all thing, so you have to be very individualized with how you treat your patients.
