Her Story

About Jasmine

I've been in healthcare for about 15 years, and I really stumbled into it. After graduating college, I was interning with a psychologist and learning about this treatment called TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation). I applied for a job just because of where I lived, but I ended up falling in love with it and how it really helps people. As a technician, I worked with patients 5 days a week for about 3 to 6 weeks using the TMS device to treat depression and later OCD. You really got to know your patients, but you also got to see them getting better, which required soft skills since we were working with a very vulnerable population. From there, I found myself in a training and educational role, which is where I really felt my passion - teaching other people how to do what I was doing. I started training technicians and evolved into training physicians and nurse practitioners as well, helping design the entire training course. What I'm most proud of is spearheading the training program at my previous company with my co-worker Jenny Coleman. We had the support and collaboration with the medical director and different physicians, and we helped the company grow from about 3 clinics to about 20, going out of state. I trained at least indirectly or directly all of the technicians and physicians, and we got it down to a plan where it was flowing seamlessly while making it an enjoyable experience. Now I've moved from startup to corporate, and I do training and education for a hospital in the hospice realm, working with nurses, chaplains, social workers, and other staff on clinical training as well as compliance regulation screening. I've been with this company for just over a year as of February.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think it's adaptability. Really being able to adapt and adjust with all the different personalities. I have worked with many different types of people - the nicer ones, or the not-so-nice ones - but I've always had the patience to kind of really break through to people that might have a little bit more layers underneath them. So I think really being able to work with all types of people, and adapting my training styles, and really adjusting what I need to do when I'm teaching, or even when it's something as a corrective action, being able to do it in a way that's not so harsh, in a way that's more understanding. I think that's probably the key to my success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Master your craft. When you're in it, really, truly understand the why, the ins, the outs, the influential players, the key research materials or regulation, whatever it might be that you're doing - really understand it. And then seek out a mentor, which is also helpful to help you with understanding it. But once you truly understand what you're doing, then you can really, really make an impact on how to change it or how to adjust it.
