Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jasmine

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to surviving hardships like losing my home in the LA fire, near-death experience with craniotomy, and building community as pillars of strength. Community is the infrastructure that happens when you're having a dark moment. Having friends and being there for each other, repairing and recovering in relationships including with your career. Finding inspiration even after pivots and not letting failures stop you from doing what you enjoy.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was when starting in radio: learn everything you can about every situation because you will never get fired if you can be so useful in every realm that you couldn't be replaced. Be multifaceted like a triple threat in journalism, audio, and visual work. Find good mentors and pursue what you enjoy even if it doesn't make money initially, as these skills will be utilized later.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Know your own value and how important you are. Speak up when you have an inspirational idea or know the answer, even when you're young and lacking confidence. Share inspirations, but guard yourself with boundaries so criticism doesn't ruin your day. Be careful with who you share with and hold your own boundaries.
