Her Story

About Jasmine

I've been working in local government since 2014, specializing in Administrative Services as an executive assistant to the city manager. My role keeps me at the center of city operations, where every day brings something different. I serve as the liaison for all the administrative professionals in our city, leading our administrative leadership team internally. Working in the city manager's office gives me unique opportunities to learn directly from the person in charge, and I make sure to share those opportunities with my team and include them whenever possible. Last summer, I was nominated and became a finalist for Strategic Partner through the Admin Awards, which was a meaningful recognition of my work. I recently accepted an invitation to join the advisory board for the Admin Awards, where I'll continue to support and advocate for administrative professionals. My educational background includes a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from 2013 and a master's degree in emergency management from 2017, along with my certification as a Certified Administrative Professional and various specialized trainings throughout my career.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jasmine

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to just trying to be better than yesterday. No matter what happens, whether yesterday was bad or good, I make sure today is better. If it was bad, I make sure it's better today. That's my approach - constantly improving and moving forward, one day at a time.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was don't get comfortable. Each day is different, but if you keep progressing and learning new things and being open to new things, that's what's important. It's about staying adaptable and continuously growing rather than settling into a routine.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to ask questions - lots of them. And if someone tells you that you're asking too many questions, that's not the right spot for you. Make sure you're asking questions so that you can get what you need to succeed. Don't be afraid to seek the information and support you need to grow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge right now is learning on the fly, especially as AI is coming into our field. You kind of have to know what to expect, but AI doesn't really know all the information yet, so it's about keeping up with the changes in technology and understanding how it might impact administrative roles, since people say AI is going to take over those positions. On the opportunities side, there's always an opportunity to learn new things. Being in the city manager's office, I get the chance to talk with the person in charge of all of that. And being the liaison for all the admins in the city, when I get an opportunity, I make sure I share it with them and make sure they're included as well. That's a real advantage of my position.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is number one - that's the most important value to me. And then having support, whether it's personal or work-related. Knowing that at home you have your family's support, and while you're at work, you have your team and your supervisor's support as well - it all helps. That combination of family support and team support is what matters most to me.
