Jaszlyn Ruth is the CEO and Founder of Julie Handbags. She started sewing clothes since she was young and switched her focus to handbags in 2018 with the goal of creating a brand that gives back to domestic violence victims, as she is a survivor herself. Her vision includes using proceeds to start a foundation supporting shelter homes for women and collaborating with the recovery community. Ruth has three boys who motivate her daily, and she credits her success to her children and her strong faith in a higher power. She previously worked at an airline for five years and is now pursuing aviation school while preparing her first collection for showcase in New York City.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jaszlyn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I credit my success to my kids because they keep me going. My first fashion show was a domestic violence survivor show where I got noticed in California and LA. Having three boys motivates me every day.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

If you want to do it, just do it. Have faith because everything is confirmation from a higher power. He won't lead you into anything you can't handle. If you pray for patience, be ready for tests to see if you can handle it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take it one day at a time. Get a notebook, write down what you want and how you see yourself. Plan one month, three months, five months, but don't go past a year. Take it one step at a time. It's okay to fail and get back up and learn. Keep believing in your higher power.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is temptations and being around people trying to push you to do their own thing. You have to stay focused and keep believing in your higher power.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My faith values are most important. I'm really spiritual now. I've been a Christian but never spiritual until now. Believing in a higher power is the best value you could ever have in life. When I drifted away from God, I went down the wrong path.
