About Jayde
I have been in the travel industry for a little over a year and a half, working as a travel consultant specializing in luxury vacations. My typical day involves constant research because I have to know what's going on in different destinations around the world. When the phone rings or I get 40 emails a day, people want to book their vacations or even something small like a weekend getaway. My role really is to find the best, the ultimate vacation that an individual's money can buy. I focus on luxury, but I still take on other clients for family trips and cruises. I have to research places I haven't been, research those islands, see what's going on in the Caribbean or even in London or Greece. I can't just send someone to Greece without knowing what currently is happening there. Having a background in research helps because I've done it for a living for 20-plus years. Before entering the travel industry, I worked in higher education as a grants and contracts administrator. I decided I really wanted to be a small business owner and do something I enjoy. The industry is big right now, and I'm constantly training and learning new things every week. I am a member of ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors) and participate in Legislative Day in DC to advocate for the travel industry. I'm currently working to reopen the Chicago chapter of ASTA because Chicago does not have a chapter anymore. It's important that the community of travel advisors have somewhere to go and have leadership to talk to so they stay informed of what is really going on in the industry.

Ten minutes with Jayde
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Keep pushing. It's gotta come. Don't give up. Persevere, just keep pushing, just keep applying, keep looking, keep pushing, keep working. It will be acknowledged, and you will be rewarded. I believe that. Sometimes you get desperate, but I believe that.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Go to school. Learn. Don't just decide, I want to do this, and then walk away when you don't make a million dollars the first 6 months. You have to learn. You have to be willing to learn it. People who've been in the industry for 30 years are still learning. I hear it every week. I'm always in a conference, in a meeting, in a room, just to understand more. Take the time to learn it. Take the time to learn. Whatever it is you want, learn it. Keep educating yourself. Keep your mind fresh. Keep learning. That's the advice I've given to my daughter, my son, my nieces and nephews, cousins. Just keep trying to learn, just keep focusing, go to school, learn, learn. Learn as much as you can.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is commitment and follow-through from clients. You'll get these calls that are so urgent, or these emails, and everybody's so excited, and you ask if they have a budget. Sometimes they give it, and sometimes they don't, and they give you a budget, and then you plan the best vacation that money can buy. But there's no follow-through. They either ghost you, or they say not this time, and you've spent 3 hours researching the perfect week vacation. That's the biggest challenge, is just staying hopeful that for every client you lose, you'll gain another one. It can be discouraging when you put all the work into helping someone, and then they back out. It's a lot, mentally. The opportunity is that there are so many training opportunities and conferences. I take advantage of all the opportunity and training, probably at least twice a month. I had a big training back in February. I have two training cruises coming up this fall. This summer, I will be in Kansas in a couple of weeks. I will be in the Rockies looking at some luxurious resorts there for luxury. There's always something going on, like a conference here for luxury travel, a conference here for land travel. And fortunately, I'm in a position that I can attend almost all of them.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Transparency is most important to me. I think that it's important to be transparent and be authentic and true to who you are as an individual first, and to your family and your God. I just think it is important to always be honest with people, and be honest with yourself about what you can and cannot do. Try not to make promises you cannot fulfill, and just keep working hard at the things you want, and support your family and help people.
