About Jayne
Jayne Wellman is a municipal government leader with over a decade of experience in public service since 2006, currently serving as Town Manager for the Town of Reading, Massachusetts. She holds an economics degree from Tufts University, a graduate certificate in business from UMass Lowell, and a master's degree in public administration from UNH. She maintains a certification in public procurement and is a member of NAPA, MMMA, MMA, and ICMA. She previously served as president of a Rotary Club and founded the impact giving organization 100 People Who Care. Wellman advises saying yes and figuring it out later, noting it is never too late to pursue new paths, as illustrated by her own journey from private sector work and raising children to grad school in her 40s and elected roles.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Say yes and figure it out later. And it's never too late. You're never too old, and it's never too late. I worked in the private sector, had children, stayed home, then started stringing for a newspaper, edited newspapers, got elected to school committee, got a divorce, went to grad school in my 40s, and kept going.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always be curious. You don't know what anybody else's motivations are unless you ask. I solve mysteries every day. I hire curious people who are professional and have a great attitude.
