Her Story

About Jeana

I'm a disabled veteran with a TBI, and after my husband took me out hunting one day, I found that just sitting in the woods was therapeutic for me. As Christians, my husband and I get a lot of healing through our faith and God, so we decided to combine the two and create Country Camo Outdoors, Veterans Alliance. We wanted to help other veterans who may not find healing through conventional means such as medication or therapy. What we found is that when veterans leave the military, what they're missing is that family bond, because they've been in the thick of it with their brothers and their sisters the whole time, and then when they get out, they can't find that with the civilian world. So we want them to feel like they have that again. Our home is open to them, they come and go throughout our home the whole time they're there, and we eat family style. It's completely hands-on - we provide whitetail archery hunts where they can shoot an animal if they want, and then we show them how to prepare the animal, harvest it, and process the meat for their family. We have counselors on-site if they need to talk to anyone, everything is strictly confidential, and we have a pastor come in to talk to them. Our son has gotten involved, and it's kind of built up with friends and volunteers. It's just been our way of giving back to the veterans in the community.

Ten minutes with Jeana

01What do you attribute your success to?

God, I mean, just listening to him, and just following the path that he's put us on. I'm just leaving that up to God, and wherever, whatever path He puts us on is the path that I'm going to choose to follow.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The VA medical system is a huge challenge. It's hard to get appointments. There's so many veterans that are needing help that the backlog is just absolutely ridiculous. There's anywhere from 30 days to 90-day waits, and then even if we get referred to community service, we still have long wait times. Lots of times you're just dismissed with, they want to treat your symptoms, and not the underlying problem. There's just not a lot of people that want to dig into the mental health, and then our providers are just constantly rotating out, so veterans have to keep telling their stories over and over, and then they relive that trauma, and that's not a good thing.
