Her Story
About Jeanette
I've been a counselor since 2005 after being inspired by an experience at Girls Inc. where a guidance counselor refused to provide SAT registration to a disadvantaged girl. I advocate for students and families, support colleagues, and integrate my yoga teacher training and mindfulness practices into work with kids. I have started an after-school yoga program and am writing a social-emotional learning workbook for kids and families.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
To know that we can't control anything, we can only influence, and we are seed planters. The seed that we plant might not always grow right away. Also try to have some type of work-life balance and pour into yourself to avoid burnout.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include trying to help a large number of students and families without burning out, especially with limited community resources and only being able to influence during the school day. Opportunities include applying for fellowships like the Margaret Metzger Fellowship, grants for yoga training, and creating resources like a social-emotional learning workbook for kids and families.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Having work-life balance and pouring into yourself to avoid burnout, such as walking barefoot in the backyard or spending time in nature.
