Q

What do you attribute your success to?

After 24 years as a nurse, I found my true calling in nursing education, which led me to my current role as Dean of Nursing at Jersey College. My journey began at the bedside, where hands-on patient care shaped my approach to healthcare and inspired my passion for mentoring future nurses.

In my current role, I lead a talented faculty, empower students to become lifelong learners, and help them navigate the ever-changing healthcare landscape. Reaching the dean position within two years reflects both the supportive environment at Jersey College and my dedication to leadership and mentorship.

Education has been the foundation of my career. My bachelor’s and master’s degrees equipped me with the skills and knowledge to lead and influence the profession. Beyond the college, I actively participate in professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, Tennessee Nurses Association, and the NLN Board of Nursing, advocating for the future of nursing and fostering growth in the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For young women entering the nursing field, I emphasize the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and viewing every student and patient as a success story. Healthcare is dynamic and fast-paced, and staying current with innovations while fostering resilience in those you mentor are essential qualities for nurse leaders. Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, and never underestimate the impact you can have on the lives of others.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in nursing today is that, while the profession is predominantly female, leadership roles and the broader healthcare landscape remain male-dominated. Supporting female professionals and students as they advance is essential, and equipping them with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to succeed in a competitive environment is a priority. Programs focused on recognition, mentorship, and networking are critical opportunities to help bridge this gap and empower the next generation of nurse leaders.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are encouragement, positivity, and service. I make it a point to uplift my students every day—often reminding them, “You got this!”—and many know I’m in the building simply by hearing those words. I encourage new educators to view every student as a success, because each one is giving their best, and recognizing that effort fosters confidence and growth.

Service has also been central to my philosophy. I have volunteered with Remote Area Medical (RAM), a free healthcare initiative providing medical and dental care to underserved communities. While my responsibilities as dean limit my time for volunteering, I continue to engage with RAM alongside students, modeling the importance of service, compassion, and giving back in the nursing profession.
