Her Story
About Jeannette
I started working in a veterinary office while I was in grad school getting my master's in counseling psychology. I never intended for it to be my career but ended up falling in love with the field. I wanted to apply what I learned in grad school to the vet field because it's very much needed as it's a difficult field psychologically. I moved up quickly from customer service representative to lead within a year, then to hospital manager, and I'm the youngest manager in my region. I'm finishing up my license for registered veterinary nurse.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jeannette
01What do you attribute your success to?
My work ethic and drive, which I modeled by my parents who both worked incredibly hard raising my sister and I. They never saw themselves above anything and always saw the family as the priority. We work to live, we don't live to work, and making sure that whatever you do, you do your absolute best in because being able to take care of your family is what matters the most.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You don't know what you don't know. Always be open-minded but also not let people take your kindness for granted. You owe yourself everything first. Challenge the people-pleasing tendencies that young women often have. Don't write emails apologetically - proofread and delete all apologies, sorry for the inconvenience, or would you mind. Send it like a guy would send it to me. Be the strong, independent person that you absolutely can be.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include working in a corporation and balancing the needs of the corporation versus the wants of the field, what we want to do for the pets and their parents versus what the company needs. I try to bring in programs, grants, financial aid, client education and outreach to keep clients involved.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In personal life, my family means everything to me, making sure that they're always in a stable place and everybody feels stable and safe. At work, keeping a mentally safe and physically safe environment is very important. Good medicine comes from good people - if you treat people right, the fruits will follow. Making sure that people feel very centered at work.
