Her Story

About Jelicia

I started in economic development only a month ago. Before that I co-founded my own nonprofit for quite a few years and learned a lot about the impact of storytelling. I have a bachelor's in English education and was a teacher, then got my master's in library and information sciences and worked as a librarian including as graduate assistant for the New York Public Library which built strong research skills.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I just received some advice from my CEO not too long ago to stay authentic, curious, and humble. And that it would open so many doors for me. By really staying true to who you are and carrying that into your day-to-day it makes building relationships easier.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For economic development it can feel like a boys club. Identify your allies in the other strong women in your field, seek out mentorship, and hold your head high with confidence when you walk into a room and know that you belong there.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Opportunities-wise I'm coming in with a fresh set of eyes and skills and I feel like the world's my oyster. There's just so many stories to tell in a new creative fresh way. Challenges include transitioning happening at executive level leadership and filling that gap with the next gen.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is one of my favorite things. Doing your due diligence especially as someone who does PR really making sure your data is accurate your messaging is accurate and that you're really representing not just yourself but a firm a region an industry.
