Her Story
About Jen
Jen Sickles is the co-owner of Brass Wolf Workshop in Denver, Colorado, where she works in woodworking design and creates everything from custom wedding gifts to large-scale installations. She started the business with her partner, a lifelong woodworker, initially managing the business side before developing a passion for woodworking herself. Today, she combines her background in management and human resources with hands-on craft, using both traditional woodworking and CNC technology in her work. Jen believes that building a business takes grit, perseverance, and a willingness to take chances on yourself. She encourages women entering traditionally male-dominated industries to stand their ground, challenge expectations, and find their own way forward.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say my partner. We balance each other out really well, and I think having someone who complements you and supports you has been a big part of our success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Pursue what you’re passionate about and be willing to take a chance on yourself. The money will follow. It may not happen right away, but if you believe in what you’re doing and keep moving forward, it will come.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Stand your ground and don’t be afraid to challenge the way things have always been done. If you believe in yourself and what you’re capable of, don’t let someone else’s expectations define what you can do.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think one of the biggest challenges is getting people to understand the value of handmade work. There’s always going to be something cheaper or faster, but there’s an opportunity to show people why craftsmanship, quality, and the story behind a piece matter.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Grit and perseverance are really important to me. I believe in standing your ground, staying true to your values, and following your moral compass even when it isn’t the easiest path.
