Her Story
About Jenn
Jenn White is an Emmy Award-winning photojournalist and football coach with approximately 20 years of experience in television news, photography, and sports coverage. She earned her bachelor's degree in Communications and Journalism from Cleveland State University in 1995, where she discovered her passion for television production through internships. Throughout her career, Jenn covered major sporting events, including professional hockey, football, and baseball, while reporting on news stories in challenging and often dangerous environments. Her dedication to visual storytelling earned her an Emmy Award and an Associated Press Award, establishing her reputation as a skilled journalist in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
As one of the early women in television photojournalism and media, Jenn consistently challenged gender stereotypes and advocated for equal opportunities for women in the industry. She also made history as the first female football coach at Gallaudet University, the only university in the United States specifically established to serve deaf and hard-of-hearing students. When she entered the industry in the 1990s, female photographers were uncommon, and she frequently encountered doubts about her ability to manage heavy camera equipment and perform demanding assignments. Through perseverance, professionalism, and determination, she overcame these obstacles and helped pave the way for other women pursuing careers in journalism and videography.
Following a serious workplace injury that affected her ability to operate camera equipment, Jenn transitioned from television into new professional opportunities, including coaching college football. In 2022, she served as an assistant linebacker coach at Gallaudet University, contributing to the team's conference championship season. Today, Jenn serves at Sign My Jersey, where she promotes hard-of-hearing and deaf athletes across the United States. She has also worked as a football scout for Sign My Football, identifying opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing football players, and continues to pursue her creative interests through Crankypants Photography, her photography business.
Additionally, Jenn earned a master's degree in Sport Administration from Arkansas State University in 2024, further strengthening her foundation in sports management as she pursues opportunities in football scouting and athlete representation. Through her diverse experience in journalism, photography, and coaching, Jenn remains committed to expanding opportunities for underrepresented individuals and demonstrating that determination and talent can overcome traditional barriers.

Ten minutes with Jenn
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, determination, and my willingness to challenge stereotypes. Throughout my career in television photojournalism, I faced obstacles in a male-dominated industry, but I refused to let others' doubts define my abilities. Instead, I focused on proving myself through hard work, professionalism, and excellence. I believe in embracing challenges, breaking barriers, and creating opportunities for women who follow. My journey taught me the importance of believing in myself and never allowing others' expectations to limit what I can achieve.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received came from a professor who encouraged me to learn through hands-on experience and believe in my abilities. His guidance helped me discover my passion for television production and pursue a career in a male-dominated industry. I also believe in the importance of networking, mentorship, and supporting others. Throughout my career in journalism and football coaching, I have learned that we should create opportunities for others, share our experiences, and help the next generation succeed.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women is to believe in your abilities and never let someone else's assumptions limit your potential. Do not expect special treatment because you are a woman; instead, seek equal opportunities to demonstrate your skills, knowledge, and determination. Be willing to challenge stereotypes, embrace unfamiliar opportunities, and prove what you can accomplish through your work. Just as importantly, support other women and help create opportunities for the next generation. Your gender should never determine what you can achieve.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges is ensuring that women continue to receive equal opportunities in traditionally male-dominated fields. However, I see tremendous opportunities for women to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and inspire future generations. In photography, there is also an opportunity to encourage creativity and help young people discover their unique perspectives. Through mentoring, public speaking, and networking, I hope to continue supporting others, sharing my experience, and showing that it is never too late to explore new opportunities.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are respect, perseverance, compassion, and treating others fairly. I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities regardless of gender or background. As a journalist, photographer, and football coach, I have learned the importance of understanding others, recognizing their struggles, and supporting their growth. I also value meaningful relationships, mentorship, and lifelong learning. Whether I am working with athletes, encouraging young photographers, or connecting with the deaf community, I strive to make a positive difference and help others recognize their potential.
