Her Story
About Jennie
Jennie Slate is the division administrator for Duke Gastroenterology, one of the largest GI divisions in the country. With 15 years in healthcare, she has spent the past 7 years in her current role managing operations for the division's clinical, research, and education missions. Her work sits at the intersection of strategy, operations, and finance, where she leads complex operational initiatives across clinical access, staffing, faculty compensation, and process improvement. She focuses on seeing the whole system and identifying where problems break down before they do, building practical solutions that make things better for patients, providers, and administration. Jennie began her career in nursing services at Duke after an unconventional interview process and has been promoted four times within operations during her tenure. She started at NC State studying pre-law before shifting to communication and later earned her MBA in finance from Clark Atlanta University, which helped shape her focus on the fusion of communication and financial strategy in healthcare operations. She is a member of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jennie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being a lifelong learner. I got my MBA thinking it would open doors, and it has been helpful, but the learning never stops. Knowing when to be humble, take a step back, admit mistakes, and learn from them is key. I'm not always right, and you have to know that about yourself to move forward and continue to grow.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
No matter where you start in the industry, learn from the bottom up. Even if you come in mid-career with an MBA, sit down with the people doing the work because learning what they do really helps with top-down decisions. Be a lifelong learner. You can learn from leaders, peers, and those who support you. My direct team has taught me so much in a two-way relationship.
