I've been a designer for about 20 years and have been designing homes for 12 years. I fall in the design-build category, and my unique niche is really having a strong understanding of construction while bringing my fashion and design background to it. I have a pretty strong design aesthetic, but I also understand the nuts and bolts and the actual cost behind making decisions. A lot of amazing designers can make something beautiful, but they're not actually practical. I'm a very practical designer because a lot of times I'm paying for this myself, and I understand what it actually costs and what it takes to implement the changes. I'm currently working on a major custom build with a 6,000 square foot main home and a guest house. I'm taking homes down to the slabs, sometimes completely demoing and starting fresh. I design the plans with architects, manage the site with the supers, and handle everything from exterior finishes to interior finishes, cabinetry, landscaping, and all the planting. My typical day starts around 6am with a walk and cold plunge, then I'm on-site by 7 or 7:30. I spend about 60-70% of my day on-site doing walkthroughs with subs, coordinating timelines, running to vendors for samples, and problem-solving. I work in a trailer on-site, then come home around 3 or 4pm to my home office for another 3 or 4 hours. I'm also documenting this current build on my YouTube channel called Home of Jen.
