Her Story
About Jennifer
Jennifer Hood is an accomplished accounting and finance professional with more than 20 years of experience spanning banking, accounting, financial analysis, payroll, and incentive compensation. Her career has progressed from banking and staff accounting roles to specialized compensation work and accounting management, building a strong foundation in financial reporting, reconciliation, compliance, and business problem-solving. She currently serves as a Sales and Service Specialist, where she applies her expertise in incentive compensation and collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders to implement financial and compensation initiatives effectively.
Throughout her career, Jennifer has demonstrated a strong ability to identify financial discrepancies and develop practical solutions with measurable results. At Worldpay, she identified and helped resolve an approximately $2 million payroll liability that had not been recorded timely, while at Fifth Third Bank she uncovered approximately $195,000 in California unemployment tax overpayments. She also redesigned a sales incentive plan that was unintentionally discouraging employees from pursuing promotions, developing a cost-neutral structure that better aligned compensation with organizational goals. Her work reflects a combination of analytical precision, financial expertise, process improvement, and strategic thinking.
In addition to her corporate career, Jennifer is the founder of Rooted Business Advisors, a bookkeeping and financial consulting company focused on supporting growing small businesses. Through the business, she provides bookkeeping, financial reporting, payroll oversight, and financial guidance to owners who have outgrown do-it-yourself financial processes but are not yet ready to hire a full-time financial professional. Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Cincinnati Carl H. Lindner College of Business and is a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP). Outside of her professional pursuits, she is a mother of three who enjoys swimming, container gardening, and baking.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jennifer
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to persistence, attention to detail, curiosity, and a willingness to take action even when I am not completely ready. I believe in questioning what doesn’t look right, solving problems thoughtfully, and continuing to move forward despite uncertainty. These qualities have helped me identify opportunities, create meaningful business impact, and embrace new challenges, including entrepreneurship.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received came from a former accounting director who took the time to teach me, explain the reasoning behind my work, and invest in my development. That experience showed me the value of having mentors and leaders who genuinely help people grow rather than simply direct them.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering my industry not to wait for the perfect opportunity or until they feel completely ready. You may never feel fully prepared, so trust yourself, take the opportunity, and learn as you go. Sometimes, you simply have to take the leap and do it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I see a strong opportunity to support small businesses that have outgrown managing their finances themselves but are not yet ready for a full-time accounting professional. Through Rooted Business Advisors, I help entrepreneurs strengthen their bookkeeping, gain clearer financial insights, and receive experienced guidance as their businesses grow.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are accuracy, integrity, perseverance, family, continuous learning, and practical problem-solving. I believe in paying attention to the details, understanding challenges thoroughly, and finding solutions that create meaningful results. Family is also a central part of my life and continues to inspire both my personal and entrepreneurial journey.
