Her Story

About Jennifer

I started as a Girl Scout as a child when my mom was a co-leader, coming up through the rankings from Brownie onwards. I was one of those shy little girls, but Girl Scouts seemed to bring the best out in me. I loved helping others, crafting, and activities - it just fit. As a military spouse, we traveled from state to state, and I saw that Girl Scouts was in every state. Though their culture was a little bit different, the mission remained the same, and I'm very mission-focused. I like to have a vision, a goal, and support the mission. Coming up as a young girl, I didn't have much - I had enough - and Girl Scouts is the type of organization that accepts a girl where she's at. You don't have to be flamboyant, you can just be you and be the best you can be. I loved that, and as I grew up, I realized this is an organization that is truly for the girl, the volunteers, and the adults. I have a heart for helping make girls, families, members, even gentlemen, be the best that they can be. I see them come as a shy little family, and then I see them flourish. I worked as a senior paralegal for many years, certified in the field, working in courtrooms during the day and taking girls on field trips to show them the judicial system. I'd show them that you don't have to be afraid - it's your system, you just need to know how it works. In life, we fear things we don't understand. Four years ago, I transitioned from paralegal to Girl Scouts full-time. When I got offered the position, I was like, you have got to be kidding me - you can work and get paid in Girl Scouts? The stress level's a lot better, and I get to play and have fun, get outdoors, enjoy the sunlight, move around and be active. It gives me every aspect - young women, young moms, older moms, adults, and children. I call it my dream job.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I'm very concerned about my age. I'm watching the younger girls coming in, and hearing conversations of, well, why don't you let the new one do that? I have experience, and I need to stay there and show them how to do it. I've been asked to mentor younger girls in Girl Scouting for the Senior Ambassador level, sixth grade through 12th grade, and I accepted. But I'm like, hmm, moving over here to this side now on my way out, or what? That's my concern - I just want to stay fluent and up-to-date. I don't want to be pushed out because of my age. I want to work out gracefully, retire type of thing, not be pushed out because of my age. I don't think that'll happen in Girl Scouts, but you kind of hear things in the grapevine, and you see things, and that concerns me a little bit.
