About Jennifer Flynn

Jennifer Flynn is a nationally recognized nonprofit leader, strategist, and advocate who has spent more than 30 years building movements that improve people’s lives and advance social justice. Based in Brooklyn, New York, she has dedicated her career to healthcare access, housing rights, community organizing, and public policy advocacy. With academic training in political science, sociology, and nonprofit management and urban policy, Jennifer has combined grassroots organizing with strategic leadership to help shape campaigns that deliver meaningful change for communities across the United States and beyond.

Throughout her career, Jennifer has founded, led, and strengthened influential advocacy organizations. She co-founded the New York City AIDS Housing Network, now known as VOCAL-NY, and spent nearly two decades building it into a powerful force for housing, healthcare, and social justice advocacy. She later served as Executive Director of Health GAP, expanding efforts to eliminate barriers to life-saving HIV treatment around the world. Today, as Chief of the Fightback/Campaigns Team at Popular Democracy, Jennifer leads large-scale advocacy initiatives focused on healthcare, housing, voting rights, democracy, and economic justice. She is particularly proud of developing the strategy that helped build the people-powered movement to protect the Affordable Care Act, a campaign that mobilized communities nationwide and contributed to preserving healthcare access for millions of Americans.

In addition to her professional leadership, Jennifer is deeply committed to mentorship, coalition-building, and strengthening the nonprofit sector. She serves on the boards of organizations including the Coalition on Human Needs, Health GAP, and North Star Fund, where she continues to support efforts that advance equity and opportunity. Known for her strategic mindset, collaborative leadership style, and unwavering commitment to justice, Jennifer believes that successful advocacy begins with listening to people, understanding their needs, and transforming those voices into collective action. Her work continues to demonstrate the power of organizing, persistence, and people-centered leadership to create lasting social change.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jennifer Flynn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a deep determination to create meaningful change and improve the lives of others. My journey began through volunteering with multiple organizations, and those experiences strengthened my passion for advocacy, community organizing, and building movements that make a lasting impact.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of career advice I’ve received came from mentors who emphasized the importance of both strategy and listening. They taught me that effective leadership requires thinking strategically, taking the time to truly understand people’s needs and perspectives, and then empowering individuals to take meaningful action that drives positive change.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to get involved, seek opportunities to volunteer, and actively engage with the people and causes that inspire you. Building meaningful relationships is just as important as developing professional skills, so take the time to connect with others, follow up after meetings and events, and nurture your network. People remember those who show genuine interest, contribute consistently, and make an effort to build lasting connections.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is that meaningful change takes time. Building momentum, creating lasting impact, and advancing important causes often require patience, persistence, and sustained effort. Funding is also a continual challenge, as securing the resources needed to support advocacy, organizing, and community-based initiatives is essential to achieving long-term success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

One of the values I reflect on regularly is whether I am showing up as the person I aspire to be. I strive to lead with love, kindness, and authenticity in both my professional and personal life. It is important to me that people feel valued, respected, and genuinely cared for when they interact with me.

I also place a high value on being approachable, compassionate, and building meaningful relationships. Whether I am working with colleagues, community members, or friends, I want people to know that I am listening, that I care about their experiences, and that I am committed to supporting them in a positive and thoughtful way.
