Her Story

About Jenova

Jenova DeBrosse is a third-year electrical engineering student at The Ohio State University. She currently serves as the electrical lead for her school's underwater robotics team and works as an intern focused on circuit design and testing. Jenova particularly enjoys analog circuit design because of the intellectual challenge it presents in understanding how each component responds in real time. This past summer, she and her team earned fourth place at the RoboSub International AUV competition. Outside of her studies and internship, Jenova volunteers with Science Olympiad and finds great fulfillment in mentoring young people by explaining mathematical and engineering concepts to help make their STEM journeys easier. She attributes her success to a scholarship that allowed her to attend college, a strong support system from family and friends, and maintaining a growth mindset. Jenova values being helpful to those around her, whether by lightening a colleague's workload or assisting newcomers to the field.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jenova

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success up to this point to being very lucky to be able to go to college on a scholarship, having a great support system from my family and friends, and maintaining a growth mindset which is really important in engineering because you go into it knowing nothing and just want to learn as much as possible.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say be curious and don't question yourself. Don't question your own capabilities. If you're in the room, you're there because you're competent and because you have the mind to do electrical engineering, so just have fun and learn some things.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges is getting young people interested in the field, bringing them in, and teaching and training them how to be great engineers because electrical engineering is growing rapidly and there's a very high demand for electrical engineers these days, which means a lot of opportunities.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being helpful is really important to me. You always want to be able to assist those around you especially those who have a greater need, whether lightening someone's load at work or helping someone new to the field who has questions to get acclimated.
