Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jeri
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to staying focused on my purpose and meaning. I believe that God has a plan and purpose for me to make a difference in the lives of others. I stay focused on that purpose and continually nurture the gifts that God has given me. This perspective has helped me remain grounded and committed to serving others throughout my career in counseling, education, and professional development.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to stay in my lane and trust that God has a plan and purpose for my life. I have been encouraged to remain focused on the work I am called to do and to nurture the gifts that God has given me. That advice has reminded me to stay committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others rather than allowing distractions or uncertainty to take me away from my purpose.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
When you have a calling, you have a calling. Do not allow the obstacles or roadblocks you encounter in life to prevent you from achieving your dreams or helping those in need. Stand tall, stay brave, and remain resilient throughout the process. The journey is not always easy, but meaningful accomplishments rarely are. When you reach the end of the path and see the difference you have made in the lives of others, the challenges become part of a deeply rewarding experience.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the mental health field is that mental health is still viewed as taboo and can be ridiculed or misunderstood. There are also not enough resources and support systems available to individuals in many communities. In addition, bias and stereotypes associated with counseling can prevent people from accessing services or pursuing counseling when they may benefit from support. These challenges highlight the continued need for greater awareness, accessible resources, advocacy, and efforts to reduce stigma surrounding mental health.
