Her Story

About Jeselle

I started my career with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, which is totally different from what I do now, but you go where your heart is happy. I was able to practice IT a little bit in the Philippines, but it was just too much about codes. A friend who worked in quality at a fishing company told me I could apply for a meat manufacturing position, and I thought about it and decided to go ahead. They said I'm like the police, and I think that fits my personality. This industry fits me in a way where I can tell people what to do and what not to do in a certain way that they feel comfortable with me. I've been in food safety and quality for almost 7 to 8 years now. I worked in Seattle at a manufacturing meat company for about 4 years doing quality and food safety, then 2 years at Target, and before that as a Quality Document Controller where I had to review documents and track changes. Now I've been in my current position for almost 4 years in Fort Myers, focusing on food safety, quality, and government compliances. My daily responsibilities include monitoring food safety, especially HACCP, watching food temperatures, ensuring we're serving safe foods, watching processes to make sure they follow specs, and handling audits to comply with government standards. I also oversee chemicals and pest control departments. What I'm most proud of is that my employees, who have been with the company for over 2 years, now follow all the specs and procedures and tell me what's wrong on the floor - it's not just me looking at it anymore. It's all about how I train them to be more specific and know what to look for.

Ten minutes with Jeselle

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't get scared about the challenges, because every challenge has a way that you can get through it. It's a matter of how you analyze things and how you solve things out. Challenges are given because God knows that we can solve it. I've been in trials many, many times, so I can say that it is really hard, but when you get passed through it, it's fulfilling. Your option is to rise and keep moving forward.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I face is miscommunications. For example, when I give directions and one of them goes the wrong way, it hits something and we get comments from the customer. From there, you have to do root corrective action - you have to investigate and give the corrective action to them immediately within the amount of time that is given.
