Reimbursement Registered Nurse

Jessica Hannie, RN, is a Reimbursement Registered Nurse based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, currently working in a private healthcare organization. She brings 20 years of nursing experience, with a highly specialized focus in reimbursement and financial management rather than traditional bedside care. While she briefly worked at the bedside during the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of her career has been dedicated to the financial and auditing side of healthcare, where clinical insight and reimbursement strategy intersect.
Jessica entered nursing with a strong desire to help people, serve as an advocate, and build a flexible career that would allow her to support herself and her family while making a meaningful impact. She has built her expertise in reimbursement and auditing, where her work is centered on analyzing documentation, identifying clinical details, and ensuring accurate representation of patient care. She describes her daily work as investigative in nature—carefully reviewing records, connecting clinical patterns, and ensuring that healthcare organizations are appropriately reimbursed for the care they provide. Her specialty lies in understanding how documentation and clinical complexity directly influence reimbursement outcomes.
Throughout her career, Jessica has achieved significant professional success through her analytical skill set and attention to detail. In one of her most notable accomplishments, she was initially told she was overqualified for a role; however, leadership recognized her expertise and created a position for her after discussions with executive leadership. Within her first two years, she helped generate over $10 million in reimbursement improvements by identifying missed opportunities, asking the right questions, and optimizing documentation review processes. Starting as a department of one, she later helped expand the team to 10 members, training and mentoring all new staff and establishing foundational processes that strengthened the department’s long-term success.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say don't limit yourself to thinking the only nursing job is bedside, or in a hospital, or in a nursing home. Literally every aspect of life, or every job opportunity, there is some type of medical nursing thing associated with it. The craziest things that you would never even think about, they have a nurse, like cruise ships - you could live on a cruise ship. There's so many different opportunities. I really only found that out because when I graduated nursing school, I was pregnant, and no one would hire me. I was showing, so I couldn't really hide it. After like the 15th interview, I came home and literally googled unique nursing jobs. And that's how I got into the financial aspect of nursing, was by just doing a Google search. My brain was blown at the different opportunities that came up, because I had no clue. I'd never even fathomed that there was other aspects of nursing besides bedside, like physical care of a patient. I would just say don't limit yourself, because nursing is limitless. There's so many opportunities.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One thing that has been on my mind is AI and how that could possibly take over positions like mine, where you're not giving patient care, it's all computerized. That worries me of like, okay, am I - is this field just gonna be kaput once AI really gets up and going? So in the work area, that's a challenge that I've been trying to think about for the future, okay, should I get into a different area of nursing? And just personally, I'm a single mom, and then having gone through the aneurysm, there's always that what if, like it could happen again at any time. Is that one going to be worse? Am I not going to be able to speak, or walk, or drive? And being a single mom, it's another layer, because it's not just yourself, you have these children to worry about.
