Her Story

About Jessica

Jessica Horne is an educator, author, performing artist, and founder and director of Obbligato Music, a modern piano atelier in Arlington, Virginia, which she established in 2003. With more than two decades of experience in music education, she has dedicated her career to creating thoughtful and welcoming learning environments where children, adults, families, and developing pianists can cultivate meaningful relationships with music. Her work combines her background in music and voice performance with a strong commitment to curiosity, musical expression, confidence, and sustainable progress.

At Obbligato Music, Jessica has developed a play-centered approach to piano education that encourages students to listen deeply, think independently, experiment creatively, and recognize their own potential as musicians. She teaches students at different ages and levels through group and private instruction, with particular emphasis on making music education rigorous without becoming stressful and joyful without sacrificing depth. Her broader training and interests include interdisciplinary studies at Wright State University, voice performance, the Phillips Collection Summer Teaching Institute, Alexander Technique studies, yoga instruction, and mindfulness practices, all of which contribute to her holistic perspective on learning and personal development.

Beyond teaching and directing her atelier, Jessica is an author, performer, and creator of practical resources for music educators. She explores innovative approaches to piano teaching, creative practice, entrepreneurship, and the lifelong value of making music. Her work reflects a belief that students should not simply learn musical skills but develop a lasting sense of ownership, confidence, and connection to their artistry. Through Obbligato Music, her writing, and her performances, Jessica continues to support learners and educators in making music a meaningful and enduring part of their lives.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jessica

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to consistently showing up, holding myself accountable to my commitments, and remaining open to vulnerability and change. I embrace new ideas, recognize when adjustments are needed, and stay committed to moving forward with purpose and openness.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received came from my mom, who reminded me that “all who wander are not lost.” Her words helped me understand that my path does not have to look like everyone else’s to be meaningful or successful. It gave me the confidence to trust my journey, embrace uncertainty, and know that I was on the right path.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to remember that success is not about being perfect, the most accomplished, or the most credentialed. If you know something your students do not, you have something valuable to share. Stay curious, keep learning and growing, and remain excited about both teaching others and learning yourself.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity in my field is creating more accessible enrichment opportunities for today’s busy students. The challenge is meeting them where they are, removing barriers, and making participation easier while celebrating their progress. I’ve found that when students feel supported rather than pressured, they become more motivated to engage, grow, and pursue music on their own terms.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are connection, empathy, and support. I strive to help people feel seen, valued, and supported while encouraging them to identify what they truly want and pursue it with confidence. Above all, I believe in fostering authentic connections with others.
