Jessica Knicl, M.Ed., Ed.S.
Jessica Knicl, M.Ed., Ed.S., is a dedicated education administrator serving as Assistant Principal and Special Education Director at Illini West High School District No. 307 in Hamilton, Illinois. With nearly a decade of experience in education, she has cultivated a career focused on student success, staff development, and fostering a positive school culture. Jessica’s professional journey began as a teacher in both general music and special education, where she guided students from elementary through high school, before transitioning into administration to expand her impact on the broader school community.
In her current role, Jessica oversees special education programs, coordinates committees, analyzes student data, and drives initiatives designed to improve academic outcomes. She emphasizes hands-on, collaborative leadership, working “in the trenches” alongside staff to ensure that both teachers and students thrive. What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the unwavering support of my father throughout my life, as well as persistence, continuous learning, and strong mentorship. Staying committed to my students and staff has allowed me to grow into leadership while maintaining a student-centered approach.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Much of your experience comes from being in the trenches—learning on the job and working closely as a team.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don’t stop—just keep going. Pursue leadership opportunities, build relationships, and learn continuously to grow into roles of influence.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
A current challenge is state funding. An opportunity lies in the ability to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In my work, my values are my students. In my personal life, my children—some of whom were once my students—are my greatest priority.
