Her Story
About Jessica
Jessica Lombardi serves as Director of Events at Flatwater, an Austin-based nonprofit operating at the intersection of cancer and mental health in Central Texas. In this role with a small staff, she manages event preparation, sponsor and vendor relations, community outreach, marketing, programming, and financial aspects while connecting individuals impacted by cancer with mental health support resources. Prior to her current position, which she has held for one year, Lombardi spent nearly a decade in the service industry after moving to Austin in 2010 and later worked in public education. She earned a bachelor's degree in art education and a master's degree in art education from UT. Her background includes an internship with The Arc supporting adults with mental disabilities through art classes and starting a charity golf tournament in 2018. Lombardi attributes her success to a strong work ethic and the confidence to pursue opportunities even when unsure of her qualifications, and she advises remaining open to experiences outside one's initial career trajectory.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jessica
01What do you attribute your success to?
I think work ethic has a lot to do with it. I chose to follow careers and said yes to jobs or promotions that I wasn't sure I was qualified for. My work ethic and confidence in myself just allowed me to say yes and learn every day and work hard to see the best way to do those jobs. Qualifications are not my work ethic and confidence. I think what has just allowed me to keep pursuing bigger and better things for myself.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Just to be open to experiences that you might think you're not qualified for, you might think that you don't have the expertise for, or you might think that you don't belong in that space at all. Just be open to that. You might find that you have all the qualifications to excel at that that you just didn't know. Whether it's going down a path and choosing a different city that you didn't think about, or a completely new field that wasn't on your rigid trajectory that you saw yourself, just being open to exploring different options.
