About Jessica

I've been a women's health nurse for my entire career since 2003, which is 23 years now. I did teach part-time for a period, but I was still working in women's health at the same time. About five and a half years ago, I transitioned into the Perinatal Nurse Champion role with what was then Vidant Health, now ECU Health. My main responsibility is to promote best practice for women's health, and specifically for birthing mothers and babies throughout the state of North Carolina. I'm focused in eastern North Carolina, which is Region 6 with 29 counties - that's pretty much the size of Maine, a pretty large geographic area to cover. I work on many initiatives including the I Gave Birth bracelet, which I pioneered in 2021 and went statewide last year. We do Respectful Care, building curriculum for the whole state for nurse leaders. We also do co-ops with NCIOM to help write legislation and Mind the Gap to help advocate for our patient population. It just depends on what project I'm working on that day. Today I worked with Eastern AHEC to identify how we were going to create a learning module for hospitals who were onboarding I Gave Birth. I graduated from ECU School of Nursing with my bachelor's degree in December 2002, and when I transitioned into this role, the goal was to have someone that was a master's prepared nurse. Through tuition reimbursement, I had the opportunity to attend UNCW and get my master's in nursing education in 2023.
