I realized staying on a path just because of time invested wasn't enough. I chose to adapt, step into something new, and it opened doors I never expected.

Her Story

About Jessica

Jessica R. is a Miami-based legal operations, HR, and compliance professional with over 10 years of leadership experience across government, nonprofit, and civil justice environments. She originally pursued a career in law enforcement, beginning her academic path with the intention of becoming a police officer. However, her trajectory shifted when she became Director of a restorative justice program in Canada, where she dedicated more than a decade to supporting First Nation communities (known as Native American communities in the United States) that were disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice and correctional systems. In her restorative justice leadership role, Jessica focused on reducing recidivism through advocacy, court navigation support, and culturally grounded reintegration services. She worked closely with individuals from intake through resolution, ensuring they had consistent guidance and access to culturally relevant resources aimed at healing and community reunification. She later expanded her impact as a policy analyst with the Ministry of the Attorney General in her province, where she contributed to justice system improvements through policy development, research, and educational initiatives designed to strengthen fairness, accessibility, and systemic effectiveness. Jessica is a published author on gender-based violence and cultural identity, recognized by the Law Foundation of Ontario for work in restorative justice.

Jessica currently works at Boyd Richards Parker & Colonnelli, P.L., a boutique civil litigation and insurance defense law firm with offices in Miami, Tampa, and New York. After relocating to Miami following multiple extended visits and a strong personal connection to the city, she transitioned into civil litigation—an entirely new area of law for her. In her current role, she manages case intake, assigns new matters to appropriate teams, and ensures files are actively progressing without delay while building expertise in a different legal system. She is working toward Florida paralegal certification and gaining hands-on experience by working closely with attorneys for at least one year before sitting for the exam. Ambitious and forward-looking, Jessica continues to set new professional goals, including potential LSAT preparation, law school consideration, and expanding the scope of her work within the legal field.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Jessica

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from setting clear goals and refusing to settle once I reach them. I’ve built my career on discipline, growth, and pushing past limits. Working in a male-dominated field strengthened that mindset, it taught me to show up with confidence, prove my value, and consistently exceed expectations.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received is to stop waiting to be chosen and start choosing myself. In male-dominated and high-pressure environments, I’ve learned that confidence is built through action not permission. The more I trusted my instincts and showed up fully, the more doors opened.

I learned that waiting for validation will only slow you down. Growth comes from taking initiative, asking the right questions, and being willing to step into spaces before you feel fully ready. That mindset has allowed me to create opportunities instead of waiting for them.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take the time to truly learn your craft and don’t cut corners trying to move too quickly. Confidence comes from competence. At the same time, don’t wait until you feel completely ready most growth happens when you step into opportunities before you feel fully prepared. Ask questions, stay curious, and trust that you’re capable of figuring things out.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

A key challenge in my field is navigating the complexity of different legal systems, especially when transitioning into a new jurisdiction. Learning a new framework from the ground up requires adaptability, attention to detail, and a willingness to continuously grow. At the same time, it’s a major opportunity, it allows me to build a more dynamic skill set and approach legal work with a broader, more strategic perspective.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, resilience, and continuous growth are the values that guide both my work and personal life. I believe in doing things with intention, holding myself accountable, and consistently striving to improve. I also value adaptability—being able to navigate change, learn quickly, and remain grounded under pressure. Above all, I believe in showing up with purpose and staying aligned with the standards I set for myself.
