Building a nonprofit from the ground up has taught me that leadership isn't about having all the answers; it's about showing up with purpose, listening to your community, and creating opportunities for others to thrive. Here's what I've learned about resilience, service, and leading with authenticity.

About Jessica
Jessica Sanchez is the Founder & CEO of Daughters of Both Suns, an award-winning 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization recognized for its innovative, trauma-informed approach to improving mental health access and community well-being throughout South Carolina.
Inspired by her own lived experiences navigating complex healthcare and social service systems, Jessica transformed personal adversity into a mission of service. She founded Daughters of Both Suns to help individuals and families overcome barriers to mental health care, disability services, and community resources while creating pathways to long-term healing and stability.
Under her leadership, the organization has developed several initiatives that address critical community needs, including BridgeCare Navigation, a resource navigation program connecting individuals to mental health providers and community services; the Spectrum of Hope Autism Support Program, which supports children with autism, disabilities, sensory needs, and their caregivers; wellness education; advocacy initiatives; and large-scale community events that increase awareness and improve access to essential resources.
Jessica's work centers on health equity, systems navigation, trauma-informed leadership, disability advocacy, and strengthening partnerships among nonprofit organizations, healthcare providers, educators, businesses, and government agencies. Her approach focuses on building sustainable systems that empower individuals rather than simply responding to crises.
She has been recognized for her leadership and community impact, including leading Daughters of Both Suns to be named South Carolina's Best Trauma-Informed Women's Mental Health Nonprofit of 2026. Through public speaking, nonprofit leadership, and strategic collaboration, Jessica continues to champion innovative solutions that promote healing, inclusion, and equitable access to care for individuals and families across South Carolina.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I can attribute much of my success to one person—my father. Watching him build and run his own businesses had a tremendous impact on me. His work ethic, resilience, determination, and the way he led people through challenges shaped the kind of leader and businesswoman I strive to be today. He taught me that success isn't just about building something meaningful—it's about serving others with integrity, treating people with respect, and never giving up when obstacles arise. Those lessons became the foundation for how I lead Daughters of Both Suns. As a grassroots nonprofit founder, I have carried those values into every aspect of our organization, helping us grow through community partnerships, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those we serve.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is, "Stay true to your purpose, and the right opportunities will follow." As a nonprofit founder, it's easy to get caught up chasing funding, recognition, or trying to do everything at once. That advice has reminded me to stay focused on the mission and the people we serve. When your work is rooted in purpose, authenticity, and integrity, the right partnerships, opportunities, and support tend to follow. It has shaped the way I lead Daughters of Both Suns and continues to guide every decision I make.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this field is simple: don't rush. Take your time, stay focused on your goals, and remember that life isn't a race. It's easy to compare your journey to someone else's, but success looks different for everyone. Be patient with the process, trust your journey, and give yourself the same grace and kindness that you would give to someone else. Keep learning, ask questions, and don't be afraid to start before you feel completely ready. The most meaningful careers are built one step at a time, with consistency, resilience, and a genuine passion for serving others.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in our field is ensuring equitable access to care. Far too many individuals and families face barriers such as insurance limitations, financial hardship, transportation challenges, provider shortages, long waitlists, and other systemic obstacles that delay or prevent them from receiving the support they need. At the same time, I see a tremendous opportunity for nonprofits, healthcare providers, and community organizations to work together to bridge those gaps. Through collaboration, innovative resource navigation, culturally responsive services, and community partnerships, we can create more accessible pathways to care and ensure that no one has to navigate life's challenges alone.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, respect, and humility are the values that guide both my work and my personal life. I believe honesty builds trust, respect creates meaningful relationships, and humility reminds us that there is always something to learn from others. Whether I'm leading a nonprofit, working with community partners, or supporting individuals and families, I strive to treat every person with dignity, compassion, and authenticity. These values shape how I make decisions, lead my team, and serve my community every day.
