Her Story
About Jessica
Jessica Severn is the co-founder and Choir Program Director of El Sistema Texas, a non-profit organization based in Houston, Texas, dedicated to providing music education through orchestras and choirs to between 300 and 500 children and their families. Born in Venezuela, she began her musical journey at a young age, singing in choirs and later studying cello, singing, and choir conducting at a conservatory. After one year of law studies, she pursued her passion for music at the Experimental University of the Arts (Unearte) in Caracas, graduating as an opera singer. She has worked in the music field since she was young, performing as a soloist, playing instruments, conducting choirs, and teaching music. Four years ago, after moving to Houston, she co-founded El Sistema Texas with two friends, inspired by the El Sistema movement in Venezuela. She finds the most rewarding aspect of her career when students express gratitude for the opportunities provided through music education. Severn attributes her success to the support of her family, who have backed her since day one, and emphasizes the importance of family and community both in her professional and personal life. Her teacher advised her to study toward perfection, noting that while perfection belongs to God, practice is the path to success. Currently, she faces challenges in securing financial support for the non-profit to expand its reach.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jessica
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my family because they have supported me since day one.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My teacher used to say study onto perfection, but perfection doesn't exist because the only thing that is perfect is God, so practice is the only way to find success.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Opportunities are everywhere but the most challenging is the financial part as a non-profit needing economic support to build more and receive more kids.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is the most valuable thing. My co-founders are like family and we create a community, and in my personal life it is attached because my kids will soon be in the same path.
