Ten minutes with Jessie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to experience, not just the polished kind, but the difficult kind too. Every firm I worked for taught me something valuable. I learned from disciplined designers and architects who took me under their wing and showed me the importance of precision, process, and professionalism. I also learned from difficult clients, unreliable contractors, tight deadlines, and projects that didn’t go according to plan.
The truth is, this industry teaches you just as much through adversity as it does through mentorship. I learned how to problem solve under pressure, how to communicate clearly when emotions are high, and how to adapt quickly when things shift unexpectedly.
Over time, I realized success isn’t about perfection. It’s about resilience, observation, and staying teachable. I’ve carried every lesson (the good, the bad, and the ugly) into the designer and businesswoman I am today.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received was to trust the process and “learn up” when you make a mistake.
Mistakes are inevitable in design and construction. Something will get missed, delayed, damaged, misunderstood, or changed. Early in my career, I learned that mistakes don’t define you — how you respond to them does. Instead of hiding from them or becoming defensive, I learned to slow down, assess the situation, take responsibility, and grow from it.
That mindset changed everything for me. It made me more detail-oriented, more solution-driven, and more compassionate with both clients and collaborators. Every challenge became an opportunity to refine my process and strengthen my knowledge.
In this industry, confidence doesn’t come from never failing. It comes from knowing you can recover, adapt, and keep moving forward professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know your stuff and stand confidently in that knowledge.
Interior architecture and design can still be an industry where women are underestimated, talked over, or expected to soften themselves to make others comfortable. Don’t allow that to shake your confidence. Preparation and knowledge are your greatest tools. When you understand construction, materials, spatial planning, budgeting, and design intent, you walk into every room differently.
At the same time, you do not have to lose your femininity, creativity, or empathy to be respected. Some of the strongest women in this industry lead with both intelligence and emotional awareness. Clients remember how you made them feel just as much as they remember the finished space.
Also, don’t rush the process. Take in every lesson, ask questions, observe experienced professionals, and develop your own voice. Confidence built on experience lasts much longer than confidence built on ego.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI is changing everything, and I think we’re only seeing the beginning of it. Clients now have access to endless inspiration, instant renderings, and online shopping at their fingertips.
While that can be exciting, it’s also created a culture of fast decisions and imitation. Many people are buying “dupes” or trend-driven pieces without understanding quality, scale, craftsmanship, or longevity.
One of the biggest opportunities right now is educating clients on the value of thoughtful planning and intentional design. Good design is not just about aesthetics - it’s about function, durability, emotion, and creating spaces that truly support the people living in them.
I’ve also noticed that clients are beginning to value the planning stage more than ever. They’re realizing that a well-thought-out design process saves time, money, and frustration in the long run. Technology can assist us, but it cannot replace human intuition, experience, and the ability to deeply understand how someone wants to live in a space.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Balance, honesty, connection, and growth are the values that matter most to me.
In my work, I want clients to feel comfortable and confident in their decisions. My role is not to force my style onto someone else, it’s to help pull out their own inner designer and create spaces that feel authentic to them. A home should reflect the people living in it, not just what’s trending online.
Personally, I want my family and the people I love to feel like they truly lived life with me. I’m not perfect, and I’ve made mistakes, but I hope the people closest to me know they were deeply loved, supported, and encouraged to grow into who they are meant to be.
At the end of the day, whether in design or in life, I think people remember how you made them feel. That matters to me more and more as I get older.
