Her Story
About Jill
Jill Robin Payne, MA, LPC-S, LCDC, a psychosocial therapist, is as versatile as she is persuasive. From serving as a parade grand marshal to meeting a U.S. President in the Rose Garden, she has built a career as a Houston-based relationships and communication expert, coining the term Bempathy® which blends Banter + Empathy with a win/win mindset. She calls it “the voice of reason” in modern communication and her Bempathy® Book Collection emulates just that.
With over 40 years in mental health, Jill has been featured on national radio, TV, and podcasts, sharing insights into the psychosocial side of current events and practical tools to improve connection. She believes “everything is relational” and that empathy alone can divide us, fueling in-groups, out-groups, and all-or-nothing thinking. Bempathy® comes in with light-hearted banter, synchronizing the brain and helping people both personally and professionally build bridges face-to-face and digitally.
Jill continues to empower others through media and her private practice, turning situations into win/win.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Jill
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success is attributed to understanding people, a kind heart, creativeness, and perseverance, most importantly parents that helped guide me to help others.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My best career advice is to know what you want, believe you can get it, accept help when necessary and go for it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell young women entering this field to focus on relationships above all. Everything is relational - how you connect with people, show empathy, and communicate with respect will shape your career as much as your technical skills. Be curious, be kind, and don’t be afraid to bring your creativity and personality into your work. Learn to persevere, and remember that your voice and your heart matter—use them to help others and to create meaningful, win/win connections.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge today is that technology is growing faster than our humanity. This is causing stress and connecting us in a different way than humans are used to. Our human needs such as being accepted, wanting to know and being heard may get in the way of connecting in a digital world. This is where mastering Bempathy® comes in. With a blend of banter + empathy and a win/win mindset this will build trust, reduce conflict, and create meaningful connections face-to-face and digitally.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are healthy relationships, integrity, connection, and service. Remember “everything is relational.” How we treat and communicate with others is reciprocated and matters because we are all connected. There is something called emotional contagion. We need to be aware of how we affect the world and how the world affects us. Most importantly just like in Bempathy® we need to think of what we want before we begin in situations, conversations, relationships, and jobs, etc. Knowing this in itself will improve life situations. Let’s work together and create a better world. It is a process and an exciting journey.
