Jillian’s professional journey is rooted in a strong academic background in journalism and education. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Spanish from Boston University, followed by a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Denver. Early in her career, Jillian gained experience in media through internships in radio, online publications, and broadcast journalism. She also spent nearly a decade in MLB Data Operations on a part-time basis before transitioning to her full-time role, where she combines meticulous attention to data with a commitment to fostering inclusion in sports. Beyond her professional achievements, Jillian is an advocate for expanding opportunities for women in baseball and other sports. She actively supports Baseball for All, an organization dedicated to providing girls and women access to baseball and challenging the perception that the sport is male-only. Outside of her work, she enjoys cooking, spending time outdoors, and sharing her story to inspire other women to pursue careers in sports and data. Her leadership style is defined by quiet confidence, reliability, and curiosity, reflecting both her love of sports and her commitment to mentorship and inclusion.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities. My career journey began in print journalism, but I transitioned into baseball data operations after recognizing the unique challenges women face in sports journalism. I have worked in data operations for 15 years, serving as an MLB Official Scorer for four of those years, a role that allowed me to witness and contribute to the evolution of sports data. I am proud of several professional milestones that reflect both personal and industry-wide progress. One highlight was becoming just the fourth woman Official Scorer in a male-dominated field — a role that historically required women to hide their gender. Another has been to opportunity to play a key role in implementing the pitch clock and automatic balls and strikes systems in Major League Baseball, helping modernize the game and enhance its integrity. These experiences have taught me the importance of resilience, innovation, and breaking barriers while remaining committed to excellence in every role I take on.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received has come from trailblazers like Jenny Cavnar and Jessica Mendoza. Jenny, the first female MLB play-by-play announcer, taught me to trust myself in uncharted waters while balancing a demanding career and family. Jessica, whom I grew up watching play softball, has inspired me through her remarkable journey into MLB broadcasting. Both have shown me the power of resilience, breaking barriers, and pursuing excellence.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to be confident in your skills and your voice. You don’t need to be loud or pushy to make an impact! Always ask questions, stay curious, and be open to learning from every opportunity. Take every chance to grow your knowledge, expand your network, and build a reputation for reliability and professionalism.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are balance, curiosity, and passion. I value time outdoors and the quiet moments that come with it, whether hiking, rock climbing, camping, paddleboarding, or adventuring with my two dogs. I’m also deeply passionate about sports and continue to stay actively involved beyond baseball, contributing on the stats crew for teams like the Denver Nuggets, allowing me to combine my love for the game with a commitment to learning and growth.
