Her Story
About Jiya
Jiya Kamat is an industrial engineering student at Texas A&M who entered the field about a year ago after initially considering a career in medicine. She shifted focus to the technical and STEM aspects of healthcare, particularly the manufacturing of medical devices and improving patient flows. As a former president of the Women in Engineering Outreach Club, she organized meetings and networking events to educate women about engineering career opportunities. She was recently selected as a Women in Data Science Worldwide Ambassador, where she will organize events, networking opportunities, and datathons to encourage women in data science. An international student, Jiya takes pride in achieving leadership roles in engineering projects despite being younger than many peers. She credits her high school math teacher as a key mentor who encouraged her to aim high. Looking ahead, she envisions working with a health center or hospital on medical device manufacturing while continuing outreach as a speaker and host to inspire more women in engineering.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to not be afraid of being young, and maybe not the smartest in the room. Because participating and taking the initiative and being brave enough to be there is important. Just being there is what's important, even if you're young or maybe not an expert in the field.
