Her Story
About Jo
I got my start in UX through internships during college. Starting in my second year, I found marketing and communication internships, beginning at the Texas Chamber of Commerce doing communications, managing their website, email, and social media. I then interned at Starcom, a global advertising agency in New York, followed by a nonprofit where I had a really great mentor named Sarah Forbes who was my direct manager. She taught me how to advocate for myself and not just deliver on what was asked of me, but to suggest ideas for how we could be better as a company and deliver more valuable insights. She taught me not to be afraid to bring those ideas up and speak up. Someone who sat on the board of that nonprofit recommended me for my current role at Charles Schwab, where I've been doing UX content strategy for 4 years now, straight out of graduation.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say this industry has a lot of room for growth, there's a lot of opportunity here, and especially as things become increasingly digital, so it's a great field to be in, and I would really encourage them to pursue that. The best way to do so, I think, would be to have hands-on experiences, whether that's going to small businesses in their area and offering free website services, or internships, that sort of thing, but really having that hands-on experience. I think that will help them stand out. It's a great field, and I would really recommend it.
