Her Story

About Jo Anna

J.D. Kloster is a veteran elementary teacher, author, and Humane Policy Volunteer with Humane World for Animals. After 25 years of inspiring children to reach for their highest potential, she entered the next realm of her evolution. She now works to better the lives of animals. At age 65, she published her debut coming-of-age novel, LILY UNLEASHED. The epitome of the "underdog" story, this coming-of-age novel embodies themes of courage, friendship, and the power of standing up for the voiceless. The novel was inspired by the love of her own puppy mill survivor, Cagney. He suffered from emotional and behavior trauma from his puppy mill containment. LILY UNLEASHED spearheads her Empty Cages campaign which pulls back the curtain on the underbelly of the commercial dog breeding industry otherwise known as puppy mills. It promotes adoption from shelters and rescues as the way to end the puppy mill-to-pet store-pipeline; a true injustice to man's best friend for more than 30,000 years. Making a difference is the guiding force of Jo Anna's life. Along with curiosity and never taking no for an answer. Instead, J.D. asks, "What if...and she's never been disappointed. Cheers to late bloomers!

Ten minutes with Jo Anna

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Find something you love doing. You'll never feel like you're working. Even though teaching was the hardest job I ever loved. It also brought me joy every day in the classroom with the amazing children I was privileged to guide and nurture.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

A big challenge in animal welfare is promoting more bipartisan support of animal welfare bills in Congress. A great opportunity is educating the public via social media platforms that have the potential to effect change globally. And as an indie author, the sky is the limit for sharing and promoting your work on social media via podcasts, blogs and on platforms like BookTok.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Building bridges among groups with the potential to better conditions for animals matters greatly via honest dialogue and persistence.
