Joan Gallagher is the Director of Operations at HOPE MARKERS, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of children in Kenya through faith, education, sports, and mentoring. With a deep passion for building strong, confident teams, Joan focuses on empowering individuals to reach their full potential while ensuring the organization achieves excellence with integrity. She believes that effective leadership is about serving others—providing the tools, guidance, and support necessary to cultivate a culture of growth, accountability, and purpose.

Joan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Capella University, and her career reflects a lifelong commitment to mentoring, leadership, and community service. Prior to her role at HOPE MARKERS, she dedicated nearly three decades to coaching basketball and track and field, helping young athletes develop both their skills and character. She has also actively contributed to multiple church communities in guest relations, demonstrating her dedication to service and connection beyond the workplace.

Outside of her professional life, Joan cherishes her family, including her three children and five grandchildren, and enjoys spending quality time with them. A passionate sports fan, she and her husband are devoted supporters of Cleveland teams. Joan also finds joy in reading historical fiction, exploring local metro parks, and walking their nine-year-old dog, Ky. Her personal and professional life reflects a consistent commitment to leadership, mentorship, and creating positive, lasting impact in the lives of others.

I attribute my success to faithfully following the calling God has placed on my life and dedicating myself to building strong, meaningful relationships. By working closely with Hope Markers, donors, and partners in Kenya, I have been able to contribute to the development of stronger and more effective school systems.

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to pursue work I am passionate about—something that not only drives me personally but also has the potential to make a meaningful difference in the world.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay resilient during moments of doubt and to seek purpose through the relationships you build. Let your passion guide you, and remember that meaningful connections can provide both support and direction along your journey.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field right now is the ability to inspire and pass on the passion of hope to children who are less fortunate. Reaching and empowering these young lives not only creates meaningful impact but also helps shape a brighter future for entire communities.

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are humility and service. Staying humble keeps me grounded, while a commitment to serving others ensures that my actions make a positive and lasting impact.
